Diverticulitis

Diverticular Disease

Inflammation or infection of small pouches (diverticula) that develop in the digestive tract, causing abdominal pain and fever.

Diverticulitis occurs when diverticula — small pouches in the colon wall — become inflamed or infected. Mild uncomplicated diverticulitis may be managed with antibiotics and dietary modification. Complicated diverticulitis with abscess, perforation, or obstruction requires hospitalization and possible surgical intervention.
