Edema

Fluid Retention

Swelling caused by excess fluid trapped in body tissues, most commonly affecting the legs, ankles, and feet.

Edema results from fluid accumulation in the interstitial spaces and can be caused by heart failure, kidney or liver disease, venous insufficiency, or medications. Treatment targets the underlying cause; diuretics are commonly used to reduce fluid overload.
