Hemorrhoids

Internal and External Hemorrhoids

Swollen veins in the rectum or anus causing bleeding, itching, pain, and discomfort.

Hemorrhoids are extremely common, affecting approximately 75% of people at some point in their lives. They can be internal (inside the rectum) or external (under the skin around the anus). Most cases respond to dietary modification (increased fiber and fluids), topical agents to reduce symptoms, and sitz baths. Procedures such as rubber band ligation are used for persistent internal hemorrhoids.
