Hyperthyroidism
Overactive Thyroid / Graves' Disease
A condition in which the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone, accelerating body functions and causing weight loss, rapid heartbeat, and anxiety.
Hyperthyroidism, most commonly due to Graves' disease, causes excessive thyroid hormone production leading to metabolic acceleration. Antithyroid drugs (methimazole, propylthiouracil) reduce hormone synthesis. Radioactive iodine ablation and thyroidectomy are definitive treatments. Beta-blockers provide symptomatic relief of adrenergic symptoms.
