Hypothyroidism
Underactive Thyroid
A condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone, slowing metabolism and causing fatigue, weight gain, and depression.
Hypothyroidism is most commonly caused by autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto disease) in developed countries. It affects nearly 5% of the population and is more prevalent in women and older adults. Symptoms develop gradually and include fatigue, cold intolerance, constipation, and cognitive slowing. Levothyroxine replacement is the standard of care.
