Sleep Onset and Maintenance Disorder

A sleep disorder characterized by difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early, leading to daytime impairment.

Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder, affecting up to 30% of adults. Chronic insomnia (lasting more than 3 months) is associated with significant morbidity including depression, anxiety, cardiovascular disease, and impaired cognitive function. Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is the recommended first-line treatment, with pharmacotherapy used as an adjunct.
