Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Functional Bowel Disorder

A chronic functional gastrointestinal disorder causing abdominal pain, bloating, and altered bowel habits without structural abnormality.

IBS affects 10–15% of the global population and significantly impairs quality of life. It is classified by predominant bowel pattern: constipation-predominant, diarrhea-predominant, or mixed. The pathophysiology involves gut-brain axis dysregulation, visceral hypersensitivity, and altered gut motility. Treatment is symptom-directed and includes antispasmodics, dietary changes, and targeted medications.
