Parkinson's Disease
Progressive Neurological Disorder
A progressive neurological disorder causing tremor, stiffness, and slowed movement due to loss of dopamine-producing neurons.
Parkinson's disease results from degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. Motor symptoms include resting tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia, and postural instability. Levodopa-carbidopa remains the most effective symptomatic treatment; dopamine agonists and MAO-B inhibitors are alternatives for early disease or adjuncts in advanced stages.
