Peripheral Neuropathy

Nerve Damage

Damage to the peripheral nerves causing weakness, numbness, and pain, usually in the hands and feet.

Peripheral neuropathy has many causes including diabetes, alcohol use, nutritional deficiencies, autoimmune conditions, and medications. Diabetic peripheral neuropathy is the most common form. Management addresses the underlying cause and symptom control; first-line agents include duloxetine, pregabalin, and gabapentin for neuropathic pain.
