Bacterial Pneumonia
An infection that inflames air sacs in the lungs, which may fill with fluid, caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi.
Bacterial pneumonia causes fever, productive cough, and respiratory distress. Community-acquired pneumonia is most commonly caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae and atypical organisms. Antibiotic selection is guided by severity, setting (outpatient vs. inpatient), and local resistance patterns.
