Thyroiditis
Thyroid Inflammation
Inflammation of the thyroid gland that can cause over- or underproduction of thyroid hormones.
Thyroiditis encompasses several conditions involving thyroid inflammation, including Hashimoto thyroiditis and subacute thyroiditis. Symptoms vary by phase—hyperthyroid and then hypothyroid. Corticosteroids are used for painful subacute thyroiditis; thyroid hormone replacement treats resulting hypothyroidism.
