Wrist Pain

Wrist Pain and Discomfort

Mild severity38% reported by patientsICD-10: M25.531

Summary

Pain in the wrist from sprains, tendinitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, or arthritis — commonly related to repetitive use.

What is it?

Wrist pain is extremely common in the digital age, driven by repetitive computer and smartphone use. Carpal tunnel syndrome — median nerve compression at the wrist — is the most prevalent cause, producing pain, numbness, and tingling in the thumb and first two fingers. De Quervain's tenosynovitis causes pain over the thumb side of the wrist. Wrist sprains, ganglion cysts, TFCC tears, and arthritis are also frequent. Scaphoid fractures, which can be occult on initial X-ray, must be excluded after falls on outstretched hands.

Common causes

Nerve Entrapment

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome (median nerve)
  • Ulnar tunnel syndrome (ulnar nerve)

Tendinopathy

  • De Quervain's tenosynovitis
  • Intersection syndrome
  • Flexor / extensor tendinitis

Traumatic

  • Wrist sprain
  • Scaphoid fracture (fall on outstretched hand)
  • TFCC (triangular fibrocartilage complex) tear

Arthritis / Cysts

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Gout
  • Ganglion cyst

When to see a doctor

  • 1Wrist pain after a fall — scaphoid fracture can be initially X-ray negative and must not be missed
  • 2Night pain and tingling in the thumb, index, and middle fingers (carpal tunnel)
  • 3Severe swelling, deformity, or inability to move the wrist after trauma
  • 4Wrist pain with rheumatoid arthritis or gout symptoms
  • 5Ganglion cyst enlarging, becoming painful, or restricting motion

What you can do

  • Use a neutral-position wrist splint during repetitive activities and at night for carpal tunnel symptoms
  • Ergonomic keyboard and mouse positioning reduces wrist strain
  • Ice application for 15–20 minutes after activity reduces tendinitis flares
  • Stretch wrists and forearms regularly if using a keyboard for long periods
